Things to Chew On

Hamsters are gnawing rodents and must have things to chew on to prevent their teeth from overgrowing.

It’s best to provide your hamster with at least three different chew toys of different textures to find their preference. Your hamster might like one thing today and another tomorrow, so keep a few around their enclosure. You’ll find your hamster will enjoy chewing to relieve stress, or when they are sleepy, usually in a cozy spot where they are tucked away in a hide or burrow.

Syrian hamsters are generally bigger chewers than dwarves… do not be alarmed if your dwarf is not chewing a lot! Just make sure they have lots of chewing opportunities by providing many options throughout their enclosure.

Lab blocks will also provide your hamster with the ability to file down their teeth.

Whimzees

Whimzees are one of the few chew toys I can reliably get all of my hammies to chew on. Keep in mind that not all Whimzees are safe for hamsters, do not choose the ones that are soft and meant for puppies, the harder ones linked to below are safe for hamsters. I personally like the alligator shape, but you may have another preference!

Dandelion Root

Many hamster owners love giving their hamsters dandelion root to chew on. Unfortunately, none of my hamsters seemed to take to them, but many hamsters do love them! You can purchase them from Chewy here.

Niteangel Chew Toys:

Niteangel now sells these adorable little carrot chews. My dwarves haven’t spent much time chewing these, but they do look adorable!
