One of the joys of having a hamster is getting those adorable shots of them eating, sleeping and being cute! Here are a few ways I like to capture my hamster’s magic.

Pet Cams

While spying on your hamster may seem a bit “Big Brother,” it actually is very helpful in determining if your hamster is happy and healthy. It can also answer questions if your hamster escapes but you’re not sure how!

Hams can be shy, especially in the beginning. Ham cams allow you to make sure they are getting out and about, in addition to cluing you in on the activities they prefer.

I landed on the Wyze camera, it’s very small and inexpensive. For hamsters you don’t need the ability to pan around, since you’ll be mostly observing them when you’re asleep. For a small, yearly fee you can have 5 minute clips of your hamster saved on the cloud for you to review when you wake up. I now wake up in the morning excited to see what silly things my hamsters did while I was sleeping!

I have the Wyze Cam 2 & 3. Each camera comes with a magnetic back & a sticky, magnetic base so you can mount it to your enclosure using that base.

Point & Shoot Cameras

I’m still learning the ins & outs of photography, but the one thing I have definitely learned is that a good lens makes a HUGE difference! iPhones can take pretty good photos (especially today!), but they still can’t compare (in my opinion) to a camera with an actual lens.

The one I started with is the Canon PowerShot G9X. I got it second hand in case I decided I wasn’t a photographer, but in the end, I LOVE it!

Real Deal Cameras

Upgrading to a real-deal camera (the kind where you buy a base and then separate lenses depending on desired usage) does make a huge difference. I recently upgraded to the Canon 5D Mark III with a 50 mm f/1.4 lens. I got both from KEH, a great site to purchase used camera gear at a discount.
