how to organize
your hamster things
Cube Storage System
After three years of shoving my hamster stuff in a series of plastic bins then stacking them clumsily in my closet I finally decided to invest in an Ikea Kallax cube-storage system and I have never been happier!
I have a lot of hamsters… and a lot of hamster stuff… and I can get a LOT of hamster stuff in my eight-cube Ikea Kallax.
The best part is I can perfectly fit two wheels in each cube. And then I use the fabric storage bins for all the little stuff. It’s perfect!
The Ikea Kallax and other similar, cube-storage systems are often being sold second hand on FB marketplace, OfferUp or the like. If you’re on a budget but still want to get organized, I suggest you check here first.
Food Storage System
Just as you’ll accumulate lots of wheels, hides, water vessels and so on, you’ll quickly find yourself with lots of bags of various hamster foods, flowers, treats and seed sprays.
Occasionally, tiny bugs will travel with hamster food - for this reason, I highly recommend that you freeze all newly purchased food for 48 hours before opening it and bringing it into your hamster space (once those bugs spread you’ll have to throw everything out and start over! ugh!).
(If bugs are an issue where you live, you might even want to consider storing excess hamster food & treats in the freezer until it’s ready for use)
I also recommend storing your hamster food in air-tight containers.
There are a few options for air-tight containers:
OXO makes some lovely, stackable, acrylic food storage containers in many sizes. They are airtight, lovely to look at, can stack into a small space and if you get the multi-sized set, you can cover all your hamster food needs.
I went the budget-friendly route: I purchased a bunch of mis-matched, glass, food-storage containers from my local Goodwill, Poshmark & other second-hand shops. I also saved glass food jars (from natural peanut butter, spaghetti sauce and so on) for additional hamster food storage. This solution has worked well for me (as in, it looks pretty!) but can feel a bit hodge-podge and all the little glass containers don’t always stack nicely together. I may upgrade to an OXO system at some point in the future… but for now, this works, and is budget friendly!
