Roborovski Hamster Play Time!

Hello Hamster Friends!

This week I wanted to share a little about how I'm working with my Roborovski hamsters, Steven and Sofia.

If you are interested in robo hamster taming, hamster taming steps or robo hamster care, I hope this vide is helpful to you! I believe that out of cage time for hamsters is incredibly important in building a relationship with your hamster.

It can also give your hamsters new and exciting experiences so they feel happier and more enriched.

Please monitor your hamster's behavior, if they look frantic or are too scared, bring them back to their home. It is normal for your hamsters to be scared the first time they come out of their cage or are in a new area for the first time. Keep initial out of cage time short so they can build confidence over time. Ensure that any trip out of their cage is filled with hides so they have somewhere to go if they are feeling nervous.

For Roborovski hamsters in particular I would advise using a playpen like the one shown that has a full bottom to ensure your robo cannot escape through a small crack on a DIY wall. Robos are so fast and very nervous, it is best to take caution to ensure you don't lose them!

Lavernes 200 qt bin cage

Laverne had a bit of a cage clean today and I wanted to share how things are looking like for her. It’s nothing fancy but I find it very functional for her and looks nice to me!

Hamster First Aid Kit

I, thankfully, have had no hamster accidents or issues so far. BUT, it doesn’t mean that I should be prepared for something to happen to my little friends, and I think it’s important to be ready.

I do already have an exotic vet I know and like. I have taken my hamsters there a few times to get their nails trimmed and Steven has also had a health check there. I’m glad to know their hours and have a relationship with them should I need them. I am also glad to have a full time job and know that, while I’m not made of money, I’m able to cover any medical needs my hamsters may have in their life time to ensure they live a comfortable life with as little pain as possible. To me, this is part of owning a hamster, is also taking responsibility for their wellbeing.

If, for some reason, I was no longer employed, I would find a way to pay for vet care if needed, or I would surrender my hamsters to a rescue if I’m not able to provide them with this care.

All these things being said, it’s also good to be prepared at home! I just found this video from Taxonomist. I wish she still had her other videos up on YT, I see her very thorough advice on Hamster Hideout Forum, it’s too bad this is one of the few videos of hers I could find (and that’s because it’s on Hopping Hammy’s channel).

Hope this is helpful to you! I will add these things to my list of things needed as a new hamster owner.

Hamster Playpen Review

Hello hamster 🐹 friends!

This week I wanted to share how I've been using and enjoying this very brightly colored, polka dot, nylon, pop up, hamster playpen!

I have found playpen time with my hamsters a very important part of forming a bond with my hamsters. I creating this video for those of you looking for hamster playpen ideas, hamster playpen set up or just a hamster playpen review. I use this playpen with my dwarf hamsters, Laverne and Shirley. If you have a Syrian hamster you may need to take more caution as they are generally better escape artists and you may need to keep a close eye on them.

If you are looking to add a hamster to your life, please consider rescuing one in need! Hamsters are often found at you local pet shelter or on PetFinder. You can also search for small animal rescues or hamster rescues in your area. Or, you can volunteer with a local shelter or rescue to foster hamsters in need like I do. It's a rewarding experience and I'm learning so much about these sweet , little creatures. Thanks for watching!

Prevue 9 1/2” Quiet Wheel Review!

Hi Hamster Friends!

I thought I had all the wheels I could have… and then I got one more! This one was a Christmas gift, and even though I hadn’t been planning to specifically buy another, it is handy to have another silent wheel around to put into rotation.

I have the size Large size, which is only 9.5”. I recommend going with the size L if you have a Robo or dwarf. 9 1/2” is too small for any Syrian.

Pros:

Quiet, light weight, fairly neutral design/not garishly colored.

Cons:

It’s so light the base moves around a bit when hams run on it. Not a lot of color choices. Base can be easily chewed. Some people experience clicking with their wheels. Difficult removing label on base (see my video for more info on this).

How I’m Working With My Aggressive, Dwarf Hamster, Laverne

Hi Hamster Friends!

This week's video is all about Laverne, the rescue, dwarf hamster.

Laverne is full of energy and personality, but can be nippy and aggressive. I have seen a lot of people say that aggressive hamsters are "watch only," or that if your hamster is aggressive, it's simply because their cage isn't large enough or your hands smell like food, etc.

Of course, cage size and clean hands matter, but some hamsters are just aggressive, and it's not necessarily something that you have done incorrectly. Instead of finding where to place the blame, I instead wanted to do a video focused on how I'm working with my aggressive dwarf hamster, Laverne, to further my bond with her so that she can live a full and happy life.

I'm not an expert, I'm just doing my best to learn from her and give her what she needs :)

Hamsters Love Boxes

Since getting Laverne and Shirley, my foster dwarf hamsters, I have realized how much hamsters love boxes. They LOVE boxes!

So began my obsession with collecting cute little boxes, cutting a few holes in them and letting my hammies go wild.

I like to fill the boxes with some bedding, they seem to enjoy that and get nice and cozy in there.

I particularly love when they poke their little heads out!

I only use interior boxes, meaning the boxes that is not facing the outside world. Some people have said that exterior boxes are being sprayed with disinfectants, but are also just dirty for their long journey. Interior boxes only!

Sleepy Shirley

Shirley is normally pretty active when she’s out and about with us. She likes to explore and run around sniffing new smells and finding new corners to preen in.

One magical night, however, she let us convince her to hold still long enough to enjoy a sleepy moment with us.

Little Steven Does Some Daytime Nibbling

I can’t get enough of daytime Steven. He’s normally so fast and active. But daytime Steven can hardly keep his eyes open as he snacks!

Laverne Loves Flax Spray!

I was able to give Laverne a bit of a cage spruce up this weekend and put a few of the Oakwood Forest sprays in there for her to enjoy.

It’s so interesting how the different hams operate and what that means for their cleaning schedule. Laverne pees a lot in her wheel, so I’m constantly cleaning her wheels. She is also a big hoarder (even more so compared to the other hamsters). She’s constantly begging for food with her big, sweet eyes, it makes you think that she hasn’t eaten for weeks! … until you see her giant stash!

(as I discovered this weekend when I cleaned out her cage a bit).

I thought maybe it would take some time for Lavern to figure out these flax sprays were food, but in retrospect, I should have known she would get to them right away! From now on I may need to ration these to her…. she’s just such a hungry girl!

Hamster Weigh-in

Today I took Laverne and Sofia to get their nails trimmed. Even thought they have lots to dig in and climb through, these girls just have long nails!

I decided it was a great time to weigh them.

I weighed them in the carrier before we left for the vet and then the carrier alone (once they were in their cages).

Sofia weighed in at 30 grams today! I think she’s looking a little rounder these days, so I’d like to keep an eye on that. It looks like a robos weight can have a wide range, somewhere between 25-43 grams is healthy.

(Steven weighed 40 this week, so keeping an eye on him! Although he is a much bigger robo).

Now for Laverne:

Laverne is inside- totals 346 grams

Without Laverne the carrier weighs 292 grams

346-292 = 54 grams

According to various sources on the internet, 43-57 g is the average range for a dwarf hamster, so she’s doing well.

The vet tech said both hammies were so sweet and didn’t bite! She said she hardly sees dwarf hamsters who don’t bite, so that was a nice compliment! Well done, girls! 👍
